Barkley Animal Clinic and Hospital

Red Rock Rattlesnake Vaccine

We now have a Rattlesnake Vaccine available for dogs in areas of high risk of exposure to rattlesnake bites.

The vaccine must be given twice initially, four weeks apart, and yearly thereafter – dogs over 100 lbs should have three initial doses. The cost of the vaccine is $25. 00 per dose, and is very affordable when compared to the cost of administering Antivenom injections, which run approximately $900.00 to $1200.00 and up (cost varies from clinic to clinic).

Rattlesnake bites are painful and life-threatening, and even if your pet survives the initial effects of the bite, the toxins can cause permanent injury. The vaccine works by decreasing the effects of the Rattlesnake's venom by neutralizing the toxins, and significantly increases the chances of survival.

Vaccination is safer than treatment, and costs much less, but more importantly it gives your pet the greatest chance of recovery.

NOTE: Vaccination for Rattlesnake venom DOES NOT mean that your dog will not require veterinary care if the dog is bitten by a rattlesnake. You should bring your pet to Dr. Barkley as soon as possible for evaluation and treatment. Dr. Barkley is the best person to consult regarding medical decisions for your pet.
